One of our afternoon preschool projects last week was a surface tension demonstration using simple materials: water, pepper, & dish soap. The basics of the experiment is that the pepper will float evenly until the soap disrupts the surface tension and then it will disperse away from the soap, looking something like this.
When we do experiments, I like to make the materials available for the kids to follow the steps on their own during choice time. Recently, Logan made a big jump to try repeating an entire experiment on his own.
Actual Procedure
Fill water pitcher
Pour into bowl
Sprinkle surface of water with black pepper
Pump in a small amount of dish soap
Observe

I can’t even begin to guess at all that went on in this little boy’s mind this day, but the pictures tell the story better than I ever could!
My boy is growing up to be sure.
